Pass the Thread is a donation program that connects fiber arts materials with the people who need them most.
Fiber arts practitioners accumulate. Books from workshops you attended years ago. Yarn you bought with good intentions. Tools that belong in active hands. Looms that deserve to be warped again.
What you donate goes directly into the Fiber Arts Houston library — available for borrowing by members — or into the studio and education programs for student use. Nothing sits in a storage room. Everything finds a purpose.
What We Accept.
Books & References
Fiber arts books, technique guides, pattern collections, and reference works. Out of print, in print, multilingual — all welcome.
Hand Tools
Shuttles, needles, hooks, frames, hoops, netting tools, embroidery hoops, blocking pins, and other hand tools in working condition.
Yarn, Thread & Fiber
All fiber types. Partial skeins welcome. Please keep original label if possible. No yarn with mold, moth damage, or strong odors.
Fabric & Notions
Needlepoint canvas, evenweave fabric, linen, aida, and other textile substrates for needlework and stitching.
Equipment
Looms, spinning wheels, sewing machines, sergers, swift and ball winder sets, and other equipment in working or repairable condition.
Frames, Hoops & Accessories
Project bags, needle cases, stitch markers, bobbins, cards, stretcher bars, and other accessories in usable condition.
We accept donations in good condition — clean, complete, and functional. If you’re not sure whether something qualifies, contact us before dropping it off.
About Fiber Arts Houston
Fiber Arts Houston is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization building a lending library, working studio, and education programs for fiber arts, located at 2000 Edwards, Studio 302, in Houston’s Sawyer Yards arts district. The studio is open now, and the library opens to members in October 2026. Pass the Thread, our donation program, is how your books, yarn, and tools find their way into that collection.

Bring your donation to the studio during open hours. Small donations (a few bags or boxes) are welcome without an appointment.

Practitioners Ready to Pass It On.
You’ve outgrown the yarn weight you used to love. The rigid heddle is sitting in a closet while you weave on a floor loom. You have a third copy of a book you can only use one of. Your collection belongs somewhere it will be used.
A Loved One’s Collection.
A family member spent decades building a fiber arts collection. You want it to go somewhere it will be valued — not to a thrift store, not to a dumpster. Fiber Arts Houston offers scheduled pickups, donation receipts, and a home where the collection continues to teach.

Where It Goes.
Every donation goes through our intake process: items are assessed, cleaned if needed, catalogued, and sorted to one of three places.
The library — books and references are catalogued and added to the borrowing collection, available to members in person and by mail.
The studio — equipment, tools, and materials go into active studio and class use.
Education programs — yarn, fabric, and materials are made available to students in workshops and courses.
Nothing is resold. Nothing is discarded without cause. We treat donated collections with the care they deserve.

Do you accept partial skeins?+
Yes. Any amount of usable yarn is welcome.
What condition should items be in?+
Clean, functional, and complete. Books should be intact. Yarn should be free of mold, moths, and strong odors. Equipment should work or be clearly repairable.
Do you pick up outside the Houston area?+
Pickups are available in the Houston metro area only. Outside of that area, you're welcome to ship.
Can I drop off without an appointment?+
Yes, for small donations during open studio hours. For large collections or equipment, contact us first so we can make space and staff accordingly.
Do I get a donation receipt?+
Yes, on request. We'll send a receipt describing what was donated and when.
What if I have items that don't qualify?+
Contact us first — sometimes what doesn't fit our criteria fits a partner organization, and we'll try to point you in the right direction.
