Education

Classes, workshops, and private instruction in the fiber arts. For beginners and experienced practitioners.

How we teach.

Classes at Fiber Arts Houston are small. Most sessions cap at eight students — enough to work together, small enough for the instructor to spend real time with each person.

We run single-session workshops for focused skill building — a half day on a specific technique, tool, or project. We also run multi-week courses for disciplines that require progressive learning: weaving, lace, spinning.

Class announcements go first to members.

Three types of instruction:

Workshops. One session, one skill. Beginners welcome. Materials included or listed on the class page.

Courses. Multi-session programs covering a technique in depth. Enrollment required. Prerequisites listed per course.

Private instruction. One-on-one or small-group sessions tailored to your goals. Contact us to arrange. Available for beginners and experienced practitioners who want to work through a specific technique or project.

Private instruction.

Private lessons are available by appointment. Sessions are tailored to where you are and what you want to learn.

If you're a beginner, we'll find a starting point and a reasonable pace. If you've been working for years and want to work through a specific technique — lace construction, rigid heddle weaving, a specific counted embroidery method — we can help with that.

Private instruction is available for individuals and small groups (up to three people). Sessions are typically 90 minutes. Contact us to describe what you're working on and we'll match you with the right instructor.

Members get early access.

Library Sustainers (premium members) get first access to class enrollment before public announcement. If a class fills, Sustainers had first chance.

All members (including free subscribers) receive class announcements before they appear on the website.

Custom instruction for groups.

We offer custom fiber arts instruction for groups — private parties, team events, guild workshops, and school programs.

Group sessions can be designed around your group's skill level, time, and materials preferences. We bring the tools; you bring the group.

Minimum group size: 4. Maximum: 12. Contact us with your date, group size, and interests.

Questions about classes.

Do I need to be a member to take classes?+

No. Classes and workshops are open to the public. Library membership is a separate program.

What skill level do I need?+

Every class listing includes a skill level label — Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. If you're not sure, email us and we'll help you pick the right session.

What materials do I need to bring?+

Material requirements are listed on each class page. Most workshops include materials in the enrollment fee. If anything is needed beyond what we provide, it is listed clearly.

What is your cancellation policy?+

Cancellations made more than 5 business days before the class date receive a full refund. Cancellations within 5 days are eligible for class credit only. No-shows are not refunded.

Can I bring a friend who isn't registered?+

No — class size is capped for a reason. All participants must register.
