Governance.

A Board of Trustees with expertise in library science, retail and sourcing, law and governance, nonprofit operations, education, and needle arts oversees Fiber Arts Houston. Trustees are independent of management. The board meets monthly during our first year and holds an annual strategic-planning retreat.

Curatorial authority stays with the library. Qualifying members advise on acquisitions by voting on a library shortlist of important acquisition opportunities.

Caring for the Collection.

  • Every book is evaluated against a published curation rubric before it is catalogued.
  • Items are catalogued with full library records in Koha, a professional library system.
  • The collection is valued at fair market value quarterly.
  • The library space is climate- and humidity-controlled.
  • Rare books are never mailed and are read only under staff supervision.

Policies.

The board is developing formal conflict of interest, whistleblower, document retention, and gift acceptance policies, and we will list them here as they are adopted. Our current gift acceptance practice:

  • Books and patterns are welcome and are evaluated against our published curation rubric.
  • We assess fit once materials arrive. Materials that don’t fit are sold to fund more book and equipment acquisitions or donated to other nonprofits; donors can ask for excess materials to be returned at their shipping cost.
  • Unless a donor asks otherwise, every donor is acknowledged by name in the library catalog.
  • Tools and equipment: please contact us before donating so we can make space.
  • We are not currently accepting yarn, thread, fiber, or fabric.

Gifts and Receipts.

Every gift is valued and acknowledged. Donors receive a written acknowledgment for financial gifts and a receipt describing donated items and the date given. When a gift includes benefits with real value, such as a Scholar membership, the acknowledgment states that value.

Online gifts are processed by Zeffy, which charges us no fees, so 100% of your donation reaches Fiber Arts Houston. We never sell or share donor information. See our privacy policy.

Financial Reports.

Fiber Arts Houston is in its first fiscal year (calendar 2026). Our first IRS Form 990 covers 2026 and is due by May 15, 2027; we will post it here, with our first annual report, once filed. Our IRS determination letter is available on request.
