What You’ll Find Here.
The Fiber Arts Houston library holds 2,500+ books, patterns, and tools in the collection, organized in 16 categories from embroidery, knitting, and crochet to weaving, lace, quilting, sewing and tailoring, textiles, and lettering and calligraphy.
What makes it different from a public library is what’s in it. Many titles are out of print. Some were never published in English. Others are technique references that serious practitioners search for for years and rarely find in one place.
Three things set this collection apart:
Rare and out-of-print.
We collect the books that have gone out of circulation — the technique guides, encyclopedias, and specialized references that you can’t order on Amazon.
Multilingual.
The collection includes books in French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and other languages — because the best resources for certain techniques don’t always exist in English.
Every discipline.
One library for embroidery, weaving, knitting, spinning, lace, and more. Not a specialty shop but a complete reference library for fiber arts, where members can try references and tools before they buy their own.

The rarer the book, the closer it stays to home.

Standard circulation. Borrow with your membership, in person or by mail.
Borrow It With a Deposit
Rarer or more valuable titles. A refundable deposit secures the loan.
Read It Here
Too rare to leave the building. Study it on site, under staff supervision. Rare books are never mailed.
Every title’s lending category is shown in the catalog. Deposit amounts will be posted when the library opens.
Members Keep the Doors Open.
Membership pays for borrowing: pick a tier and borrow in person or by mail. Founding rates are a discounted price for early subscribers. Memberships fund the collection and keep it open.

How to Read a Call Number
Instead of Dewey, we use a call number built for this collection. It reads collection, subject, sub-subject, author (first four letters), and year, a shelf address that takes you straight to the book. Dewey is still recorded in each full catalog record.

How do I become a member of the library?
Subscribing to Twist & Ply, our journal on Substack, is free. Library memberships are purchased through Substack too: choose a paid tier (Supporter, Scholar, or Sustaining Scholar) to borrow. There is no separate signup on this website.
How much does a library membership cost?
Paid memberships open October 25, 2026. Planned pricing: Community is free (journal, updates, and catalog browsing; no borrowing). Supporter will be $9/month or $75/year at the founding rate (regular $90), borrowing 2 books at a time. Scholar will be $18/month or $150/year at the founding rate (regular $180), borrowing 5 books at a time. Sustaining Scholar will be $250/year at the founding rate, locked for life, with everything in Scholar plus first look at new acquisitions, a quarterly advisory vote on a curator-vetted shortlist, and permanent name recognition.
Can I cancel my library membership?
Yes, once everything is returned. A borrowing membership can't be cancelled while any books, tools, or equipment are checked out. The free Twist & Ply subscription can be cancelled anytime.
Can I borrow books by mail?
Yes. Supporter, Scholar, and Sustaining Scholar members can borrow in person at Studio 302 or by mail anywhere in the United States, and postage is paid both ways. Rare, in-library-only titles are never mailed.
What are the three lending categories?
Freely lent titles circulate normally with your membership. Rarer or more valuable titles are lent with a refundable deposit. The rarest titles are in-library only and can be studied on site under staff supervision.

How is this different from a guild library?
Guild libraries are a wonderful perk of joining a guild. Ours is a library you join for the library: every fiber art, open to anyone, in person or by mail, with a focus on out-of-print and non-English titles.
Do you accept book donations?
Yes. Pass the Thread is our donation program for books, patterns, tools, and equipment. We pick up in the Houston area and accept shipments from anywhere in the United States. We are not accepting yarn or fabric right now.
