Vision, Mission & Values
Why Fiber Arts Houston exists, and what guides the work.
Our Vision.
“Carrying forward that which our hands once knew by heart.”
Our Mission.
To develop and foster a vibrant fiber arts community rich in cultural, social, and intellectual diversity by delivering high-quality research resources, online and in-person education, exhibitions, and public promotion to inspire creators worldwide.
What We’re For.
Preserve
Save rare, out-of-print, and non-English fiber arts knowledge in a lending library.
Teach
High-quality classes, especially in less-represented techniques, and a path for new instructors.
Show
Put fiber arts regularly in the fine arts exhibition space.
Welcome
An inclusive community where the craft is accessible to all.
Our Values.
- Stewardship
- Every gift is valued, acknowledged, and catalogued to library standards. The rarer the book, the closer it stays to home.
- Access
- The catalog is free for anyone to search. Members borrow in person or by mail, and gift memberships open the library to students and makers who might not otherwise join.
- Inclusion
- We prioritize outreach to people who face barriers to quality fiber arts resources, including low-income makers, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, and teens and young adults, through scholarships, free tools, and other support.
- Craftsmanship
- We honor the hand. Our studio, classes, and collection hold the craft to the highest standard of technique and care.
- Breadth
- Every fiber art belongs here: embroidery, knitting, crochet, weaving, lace, quilting, sewing and tailoring, and more, in every language we can find.
