Notify me when memberships open

Free to subscribe, paid to borrow. Subscribing to Twist & Ply on Substack is free. Library memberships are purchased through Substack too, as paid subscriptions. Subscribe free today and we'll email you the moment paid memberships open.

Memberships aren’t donations. They pay for borrowing privileges, so they generally aren’t tax-deductible. To make a tax-deductible gift, see Donate.

Cancelling. A borrowing membership can't be cancelled while any books, tools, or equipment are checked out. Once everything is returned, you can cancel anytime.

The rare-book deep-dive video series launches in 2027.

Three Ways to Borrow.

The rarer the book, the closer it stays to home.

Freely lent

Borrow It

Standard circulation. Borrow with your membership, in person or by mail.

Lent with a deposit

Borrow It With a Deposit

Rarer or more valuable titles. A refundable deposit secures the loan.

In-library only

Read It Here

Too rare to leave the building. Study it on site, under staff supervision. Rare books are never mailed.

Every title’s lending category is shown in the catalog. Deposit amounts will be posted when the library opens.
